The Butler’s Pantry

Want your home to stand out?

What Is a Butler’s Pantry?

A butler’s pantry is the small, multifunctional room between the kitchen and dining room. The purpose of a butler’s pantry was primarily for the storing of the family china, as well as a staging area for serving meals.

In a butler's pantry, you'll commonly find a countertop and cabinets for keeping serving pieces, tableware, wine glasses, table linens, candles, and other items used for the dining room. Luxurious upgrades here can include a dishwasher, small wine refrigerator, or sink, but needn’t be that fancy.

Located adjacent to the dining room or other entertaining space, a butler's pantry allows the host to prep for meals without having to go into the kitchen, and perhaps act as a staging area for food.

In every kitchen, there's competition for storage—you need everyday dishes, glasses, silverware, and pots and pans in close proximity.

But the fancy dinnerware, linens, and serving dishes don't need to be housed in the same spot, which makes storing them in the butler's pantry the ideal solution. Glass-fronted cabinets with interior lights are common in butler's pantries, and the space can be viewed as a jewelry display.

Try selecting cabinet styles that work with the nearby dining room, rather than match them to the kitchen, because it gives the pantry a bit more formality.  (refer to WILDFAIR, the 2025 Designers Showcase house decorated for Mansion in May).

Not one for entertaining? A butler's pantry can be used as a beverage area.  If the space has plumbing, consider a wet bar, but dry bars can be very useful, too. Also, it could be devoted to your belove pets.

Dog and cat food, toys, and medications can be stored here.  Others have given the spot over to their kids, designating lower drawers and the small fridge for their snacks and drinks, which cuts down on traffic in the main kitchen. Others use it as a fancy space to store wine. The choice depends on your family’s needs.

So what's not to love about a butler's pantry? It's a functional space that provides more storage near the kitchen and the dining room—areas where you probably need it the most.

In my opinion, one of the most charming ways to have extra storage in a kitchen is with a butler’s pantry!

 Why Add One?

It provides much needed extra storage!  Many people have extra sets of dishes, serving pieces that they may not use (nor want to part with), but would love to display. What better way to display them than in a space as pretty as a butler’s pantry?!

Another benefit to having a butler’s pantry is, unlike a kitchen, they are not used as intensely. And that means you can use gorgeous finishes like marble or unpolished brass as a countertop, without worry.

If you are thinking about designing one, I recommend that you use that marble or natural stone that you’re too nervous to use in your kitchen!

These ideas add that extra special touches that buyers are looking for, and will compare your home against.  What a great way to make your investment stand out and shine!
