TWEEKING YOUR HOME LIGHTING

Invited Guest Contributor Turner Martin Design

Lighting is an often underestimated part of our homes and businesses. Besides having a huge impact on aesthetics and functionality, it can also have profound effects on your mood, emotions, and wellbeing. Particularly as days get shorter and we approach the darker days of fall and winter, it’s important to emphasize just how important our indoor lighting is.

How can you change the light in your home for a happier and more productive you? Fortunately, there is a lot of scientific research on the effects of light that can help with your interior lighting design. Instead of remodeling your home, you may just a need a slight tweaking on your lighting scheme.

Ambient lighting sets the tone in each room. In this photo  Interior Designer Turner Martin Design wrote an article about  ‘Accent the Positive’. He talked about using accent lighting, one of the four functions of light, as a way of moving your eyes around a space and to create a heightened sense of depth and dimension. The other three elements of good lighting are task, ambient and decorative

Basically, ambient lighting is indirect lighting. A smooth illumination that is bounced off the ceiling. It softens the shadows on people’s faces and fills the space with an even glow to visually open up the architecture and draws people in. Ambient light can be created in a variety of ways.   Reflect light to project the light upwards so that the ceiling is gently illuminated which will then reflect the light back down towards the walls and floors which can be done with a high gloss ceiling paint. This provides accent lighting within the space as well. Other sources of ambient lighting are torchieres, cove lighting and indirect lighting.

Psychological and Physiological Effects of Light

Emotions (both positive and negative) are felt more intensely under bright light.
Excessive light at night, including electronic media, can create difficulties sleeping and exacerbate sleeping disorders (Consider installing lux on your electronic devices to combat the negative effects of blue light).
Students and workers are healthier, happier, and more productive when there is more natural light (day lighting). “Daylighting also decreases utility costs and improves the well-being of those indoors.”

Whether you want to get a good night’s sleep to improve your relationships and productivity at home- an interior lighting change may just be the solution.

Lighting is both an art and a science — it can affect our mood, appetite, and sleep. In order to implement an effective lighting strategy for your home, you will need a professional that fully understands electrical systems and lighting design. Besides the technical knowledge required, the person installing your lighting should also be concerned with mood, aesthetics, safety, and enjoyment.
