LIVING IN SMALL SPACES within LARGER HOMES

Invited Guest Contributor: D. Falvery

This does not always mean living in an apartment.  Small spaces can exist anywhere.  When working from home, even open concepts need some sort of privacy that needs to be functional to be useful.  Many companies have risen to this challenge. Every space has to do double duty.  Small homes and smaller spaces had fallen out of popularity, but Covid has changed all of that.  Our homes are not necessarily getting bigger- but now we are going to need those personal spaces.

One mistake that could be made in a  small space is to scale down on the furniture and accessories.  You really need to overscale at least one piece to make it your focal point in the room.  One of the pieces should impress. Avoid having to take your decorative pillows off the chair or sofa- eliminating clutter. The goal here is to have a focal point that anchors the room.  Look for pieces, too, that can be moved, shifted, or layered. The idea here is multiple uses.

Bold colors can add interest; like oversized wall art, book shelving, or colorful wallpaper that doesn't take up floor space.  Bring the eye upward by choosing a pale contrasting ceiling paint- like blues or creams to create visual interest.  Mirrors are another way to embolden a room and create a wonderful decorative accessory.

Light layering is important, as well. Overhead ceiling lighting, cove lighting, chandeliers, and wall sconces can be used.  Proportion is key to the size of the space- taking into consideration the ceiling height.

Small spaces can be successfully created within bigger homes. Simply hanging a mirror, choosing a focal point, and properly lighting the space can add warmth and drama. You don't have to live starkly in your newly created "small space" but knowing how to create that ambiance will work wonders for your room!

Need some practical advice about how to carve out space in your home?  Call me- I would be happy to share some of my ideas!
