Historical throw-back among the Somerset Hills
“Hoffman’s Cabin by the River”

A bit of “Americana” in the Somerset Hills town of Califon known as “Cabin by the River”; wildlife lovers and sportsmen take note- these 17 acres in Hunterdon County known as the Nellie Hoffman Estate circa 1840, is pretty far from the grandeur of the turn- of- the- century estates you would normally find in Bernardsville. But as you may come to learn- New Jersey is such a diverse state offering such a range of secrets tucked away in plain sight that you could possibly imagine, takes up such a small space. It is the fourth-smallest state in the Union but is host to many interests and lifestyles.
Now managed by the Califon Historical Society, whose efforts have restored the house and cabin, serves as its headquarters. Until fairly recently, the cabin had been available for rent along the riverfront for fishing and hunting enthusiasts.
Sitting on the wide front porch, note the rough wide-board decking hewn by a local sawmill. The one-room cabin is adorned with period pieces reflecting the rugged bygone days of camping vacations. A fieldstone fireplace and an ancient canoe adorn the rafters, with rustic furniture scattered about. A model train at Christmas time will be on display, too.
