Colorful, pattern-filled classic rooms and houses are meant to be beautiful, but also lived in and enjoyed even when you are using a monochromatic color scheme.  Sofa arms worn through, rugs slightly threadbare, add to the idea that comfort and use of your rooms live here.  When the rooms show the marks of family life over time, the goal has been achieved; a house that is lived in and well-loved. Buyers can sense this.

Guidance on furniture plans, complementing the architecture of a space, playing with color, and mixing patterns all need to be considered.  It is important to have consistent threads throughout a home, but also contrast and juxtaposition. And most importantly; homes that welcome you at the end of a long day, homes for living, homes to love, are important elements for good living.

Decorating is all about relationships.  To find your vibe- each room, as well as the entire house for that matter, is to find the right mix of colors, patterns, finishes, and styles that delight you!  They all must combine to serve a purpose.

Think about your contrast

Every house and every room in it works best with contrast. There are many different examples of this and it need not be obvious or extreme.  Consider your choices:

Color
Pattern
Material
Scale

Also to be considered are Period pieces and style. Example of this: light with dark, old with new.  For an example say, in your dining room:  try an antique table with modern chairs, or a Lucite tabletop with French Regency upholstered chairs in a bold color.  Also, it can be a dark table with light chairs or a light table with dark chairs.   Contrasts on the floor could be rustic stained floorboards with highly lacquered high gloss walls and a crystal chandelier.  The idea here is to mix old with new for drama and interest.

When choosing a painting or prints to display, colors may be chosen from across the spectrum. This visual complexity will stand out beautifully against solid painted walls. Texture also is a definite standout in any room. The mix of:

Leather
Boucle
Linen
Wools
Velvet
Silk

all enhance the room and make it feel distinctive.  In design as well as chosen decorations, contrast and balance go hand-in-hand.  Paint choices are not the only way to achieve contrast.  Contrast is a fundamental element of interior design because it adds visual interest to a space that makes it striking and dynamic. Harmony is important in a design scheme, but with too much of the same, everything will just blend together and leave you with a boring, monotonous space. Contrast brings in that balance and depth you need to bring your design concept to completion. It can also be used to highlight certain room features or other design elements.
